ILLUSTRATIONS - Selected Freehand Illustrations

Yes, I like to draw space ships… among other things

It’s nice to get a break from computer screens sometimes. With that in mind, here is a selection of some of my freehand drawings.

Democratic Space Fleet

An NHS, Nasa, Black Lives Matter and Nuclear Disarmament supporting space ship is cleared for landing at its spaceport. I love sci-fi films and books, so was aiming to replicate some aspects of Bladerunner, Star Wars or The Fifth Element, and of course, Syd Mead.

Because the city view is from quite far away, it doesn’t need perspective, so I set up an axonometric grid and penciled in the rough drawing before inking it in. The spaceship interior is a single point perspective.

Beetle-bug Starship

I wanted to design a spaceship that resembled an insect. I didn’t push the concept enough, but enjoyed just making it up as I went along. This elevation view is aspiring to be a technical drawing really, but with some character. There is a real sub-culture of people who do beautiful drawings like this out there: here’s my attempt.

Lockdown Kitchen

I spent a couple of days drawing our kitchen as a single point perspective, during lockdown, apologies if my political views are a bit too front and centre in this one. Tiger King was such a sensation at the time, so I included it as well.

Duo-Spacecraft

This is another slightly improvised spaceship, drawn as a two point perspective. Not my best (I rushed the background which didn’t help) but the idea was to play with form and create two objects that hug or spoon each other.

Space 3xplorer

I called this illustration Space 3xplorer because there are three pilots and three main windows. I wanted to create a contrast between a scrappy craft interior and the jewel-like planets and stars outside.

Alphabet Aerodynamics

I created a birthday poster for my wonderful fiancée, Laura, assigning our families different letters which they were to photograph themselves with, allowing me to combine them all together, spelling out a birthday message. I assigned the letters randomly (I should have assigned myself the ‘L’ really, but given that I didn’t, this might be the start of an Alphabet Aerodynimics project.

Don’t Panic! - Fathers Day Card

Using the design for the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy from the 1980’s TV series, I made this little illustration for my Dad on Fathers Day.

Pemberley Estate - Mums Birthday Picture

In the 90’s my mum loved the BBC’s adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, so I drew Pemberley Estate and a pretty poor representation of Darcy for her.
